WHY THE NAME 'DUPLEIX BOOKS AND GUIDANCE'
Wonder why I have named my books as Dupleix Books? Well. It is because of the fact that my grandfather, S. A. Venkatarama Iyer, whose photo I have shared here, was an admirer of Dupleix. Appears funny? Read this story.
Most of you may be aware that there was a General of the French Army known by the name of Joseph Marquis Dupleix. He was the Governor-General of French India and a rival of Robert Clive of the British India during the pre-independence days of the country.
Born in 1697 in France, Dupleix was sent on a voyage to India by his father in the year 1715. His father was a Director of the French East India Company. Because of his father's influence, Dupleix was appointed in 1720 to the superior council of Pondicherry (now Puduchery), the capital of the then French India. Eleven years later Dupleix was appointed as the Governor-general of all French establishments in India.
A fight between France and Britain broke out in Europe in 1744. The French proposed neutrality in India, but this was rejected by the British. In 1746, during the course of this fight, Dupleix seized the then city of Madras (now known as Chennai) from the British with the help of a French fleet. He dreamt of establishing a French colonial empire in India, and to that end, he started to make alliances with many local rulers. He established an alliance with Hyder Ali, the then ruler of Mysore. He trained Hyder Ali and twice defeated the allies of the British. His plans led to the Carnatic wars over the Deccan plateau and the Carnatic region. The French Government eventually recalled Dupleix because it wanted to cement peace with the British.
Dupleix was a great soldier, dauntless and tenacious. He displayed great talents as an organizer and diplomat, and exhibited imaginative political vision.
My grandfather was a not only a good photographer but was also a great gymnast. He may indeed be called an all-rounder. Since he was an admirer of Dupleix’s courage and wisdom, he named his photographic company as Dupleix & co. He himself liked to be called as Dupleix. He had a lot of affection towards me. As a mark of his remembrance and as a token of tribute, I proposed to name this site as Dupleix Books and Guidance.
